The question posed by Gateless, a band of a screamo vocalist and an electronic music producer, partners of a decade and both scene vetereans in their own right. They join for a their first musical project, a band tracing the edges of electronic and punk musics. An Lacy is known for fronting seminal American screamo bands Suffix and Lord Snow, calling amongst their peers acts like Loma Prieta, Daitro, and Saetia. Gianpaolo Dieli has released music and DJ’d as Savile and then gbd for nearly two decades, touring the US and then the global underground, since their first release on Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried label in 2010. They’ve both remained saliently present figures in subculture in the intervening years. In Gateless, the two come together in entirely new territory, in some collusion of industrial music and murky trip hop outlines, with Lacy's vocals blistering and saturated in delay from daisy-chains of live-dubbed effects. Heavy is the word that comes to mind, and the music satiates within it. As a debut project, "Are You Strong Enough To Be Kind" feels shaped and refined by decades of discovery without memetic dogma. Because to understand the Gateless mandate, in the end, is to feel, and to know that is the most human of experiences.
